Surah Al-Ghashiya ( The Overwhelming ) - Aya count 26

هَلْ أَتَاكَ حَدِيثُ الْغَاشِيَةِ ( 1 )

Al-Ghashiya ( The Overwhelming ) - Aya 1

Has the news of the Dominating Event reached you?

وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ خَاشِعَةٌ ( 2 )

Al-Ghashiya ( The Overwhelming ) - Aya 2

Some faces on that Day will be downcast.

عَامِلَةٌ نَّاصِبَةٌ ( 3 )

Al-Ghashiya ( The Overwhelming ) - Aya 3

Laboring, exhausted. (They were in motion without action. They toiled without clear direction).

تَصْلَىٰ نَارًا حَامِيَةً ( 4 )

Al-Ghashiya ( The Overwhelming ) - Aya 4

As they enter a sizzling Fire.

تُسْقَىٰ مِنْ عَيْنٍ آنِيَةٍ ( 5 )

Al-Ghashiya ( The Overwhelming ) - Aya 5

Given to drink from a spring of burning anguish.

لَّيْسَ لَهُمْ طَعَامٌ إِلَّا مِن ضَرِيعٍ ( 6 )

Al-Ghashiya ( The Overwhelming ) - Aya 6

No food for them but the bitterness of dry thorns (that they scattered to hurt others during their wayward journey through life).

لَّا يُسْمِنُ وَلَا يُغْنِي مِن جُوعٍ ( 7 )

Al-Ghashiya ( The Overwhelming ) - Aya 7

Which nourishes not, nor relieves hunger.

وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ نَّاعِمَةٌ ( 8 )

Al-Ghashiya ( The Overwhelming ) - Aya 8

On that Day some faces will shine with Bliss.

لِّسَعْيِهَا رَاضِيَةٌ ( 9 )

Happy with the fruit of their effort.

فِي جَنَّةٍ عَالِيَةٍ ( 10 )

In a Garden exalted in honor.

لَّا تَسْمَعُ فِيهَا لَاغِيَةً ( 11 )

Al-Ghashiya ( The Overwhelming ) - Aya 11

Wherein you hear not senseless speech.

فِيهَا عَيْنٌ جَارِيَةٌ ( 12 )

Al-Ghashiya ( The Overwhelming ) - Aya 12

Therein is an ever-flowing Spring of Grace (76:16-17).

فِيهَا سُرُرٌ مَّرْفُوعَةٌ ( 13 )

Al-Ghashiya ( The Overwhelming ) - Aya 13

Therein are thrones of honor.

وَأَكْوَابٌ مَّوْضُوعَةٌ ( 14 )

Al-Ghashiya ( The Overwhelming ) - Aya 14

And shiny glasses set at hand.

وَنَمَارِقُ مَصْفُوفَةٌ ( 15 )

Al-Ghashiya ( The Overwhelming ) - Aya 15

And cushions set in rows.

وَزَرَابِيُّ مَبْثُوثَةٌ ( 16 )

Al-Ghashiya ( The Overwhelming ) - Aya 16

And silken carpets spread out.

أَفَلَا يَنظُرُونَ إِلَى الْإِبِلِ كَيْفَ خُلِقَتْ ( 17 )

Will they not, then, look at: the water-laden clouds, how they are made? (15:22).

وَإِلَى السَّمَاءِ كَيْفَ رُفِعَتْ ( 18 )

Al-Ghashiya ( The Overwhelming ) - Aya 18

- And at the sky, how it is raised high? (Without visible pillars (13:2)).

وَإِلَى الْجِبَالِ كَيْفَ نُصِبَتْ ( 19 )

- And at the mountains, how they are entrenched?

وَإِلَى الْأَرْضِ كَيْفَ سُطِحَتْ ( 20 )

Al-Ghashiya ( The Overwhelming ) - Aya 20

- And at the earth, how it is spread out? (That you do not even feel the sphere, nor feel its speedy rotations (31:10), (39:5), (79:28-30)).

فَذَكِّرْ إِنَّمَا أَنتَ مُذَكِّرٌ ( 21 )

(This is some evidence, O Messenger!) Remind them, for you are one to remind.

لَّسْتَ عَلَيْهِم بِمُصَيْطِرٍ ( 22 )

You are not a task master over them.

إِلَّا مَن تَوَلَّىٰ وَكَفَرَ ( 23 )

Al-Ghashiya ( The Overwhelming ) - Aya 23

But whoever turns away and denies the Truth,

فَيُعَذِّبُهُ اللَّهُ الْعَذَابَ الْأَكْبَرَ ( 24 )

Al-Ghashiya ( The Overwhelming ) - Aya 24

Allah will requite him with a great requital.

إِنَّ إِلَيْنَا إِيَابَهُمْ ( 25 )

Al-Ghashiya ( The Overwhelming ) - Aya 25

Behold, unto Us is their return.

ثُمَّ إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا حِسَابَهُم ( 26 )

Then it is for Us to call them to account.
