| بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ |

[24:16] | Walawla ith samiAAtumoohuqultum ma yakoonu lana an natakallama bihathasubhanaka hatha buhtanun AAatheemun
|  ولولا إذ سمعتموه قلتم ما يكون لنا أن نتكلم بهذا سبحانك هذا بهتان عظيم
وَلَوْلَا إِذْ سَمِعْتُمُوهُ قُلْتُم مَّا يَكُونُ لَنَا أَن نَّتَكَلَّمَ بِهَذَا سُبْحَانَكَ هَذَا بُهْتَانٌ عَظِيمٌ |
| Words | |ولولا - And why not,| إذ - when| سمعتموه - you heard it,| قلتم - you said,| ما - "Not| يكون - it is| لنا - for us| أن - that| نتكلم - we speak| بهذا - of this.| سبحانك - Glory be to You!| هذا - This| بهتان - (is) a slander| عظيم - great?"| |

| በሰማችሁትም ጊዜ በዚህ ልንናገር ለእኛ አይገባንም፡፡ ጥራት ይገባህ፡፡ ይህ ከባድ ቅጥፈት ነው፤ አትሉም ነበርን |
| آل الجلالين | { ولولا } هلا { إذ } حين { سمعتموه قلتم ما يكون } ما ينبغي { لنا أن نتكلم بهذا سبحانك } هو للتعجيب هنا { هذا بهتان } كذب { عظيم } . |
| Lemmer, mi as teslam, tennam: "ur a$ issefk ara umeslay $ef waya! Gedha s yiseK! Wagi d acehrir abarar". |
| মুহিউদ্দীন খান | তোমরা যখন এ কথা শুনলে তখন কেন বললে না যে, এ বিষয়ে কথা বলা আমাদের উচিত নয়। আল্লাহ তো পবিত্র, মহান। এটা তো এক গুরুতর অপবাদ। |
| Literal | And if only when you want/listened (to) it, you said: "It (is) not to be for us that we converse/speak with that, Your praise/glory, that (is) great falsehood/slander ." |
| Yusuf Ali | And why did ye not, when ye heard it, say? - "It is not right of us to speak of this: Glory to Allah! this is a most serious slander!" |
| Pickthal | Wherefor, when ye heard it, said ye not: It is not for us to speak of this. Glory be to Thee (O Allah)! This is awful calumny. |

[The interjection subhanaka ("O Thou who art limitless in Thy glory") stresses here the believers moral duty to bethink himself of God whenever he is tempted to listen to, or to repeat, a calumny (since every such rumour must be considered a calumny unless its truth is legally proved).] |
