| بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ |

[38:44] | Wakhuth biyadika dighthan faidribbihi wala tahnath inna wajadnahu sabiranniAAma alAAabdu innahu awwabun
|  وخذ بيدك ضغثا فاضرب به ولا تحنث إنا وجدناه صابرا نعم العبد إنه أواب
وَخُذْ بِيَدِكَ ضِغْثًا فَاضْرِب بِّهِ وَلَا تَحْنَثْ إِنَّا وَجَدْنَاهُ صَابِرًا نِّعْمَ الْعَبْدُ إِنَّهُ أَوَّابٌ |
| Words | |وخذ - "And take| بيدك - in your hand| ضغثا - a bunch| فاضرب - and strike| به - with it| ولا - and (do) not| تحنث - break (your) oath."| إنا - Indeed, We| وجدناه - [We] found him| صابرا - patient,| نعم - an excellent| العبد - slave.| إنه - Indeed, he| أواب - repeatedly turned.| |

| «በእጅህም ጭብጥ አርጩሜን ያዝ፡፡ በእርሱም (ሚስትህን) ምታ፡፡ ማላህንም አታፍርስ» (አልነው)፡፡ እኛ ታጋሸ ኾኖ አገኘነው፡፡ ምን ያምር ባሪያ እርሱ በጣም መላሳ ነው፡፡ |
| آل الجلالين | { وخذ بيدك ضغثا } هو حزمة من حشيش أو قضبان { فاضرب به } زوجتك وكان قد حلف ليضربها مائة ضربة لإبطائها عليه يوما { ولا تحنث } بترك ضربها فأخذ مائة عود من الإذخر أو غيره فضربها به ضربة واحدة { إنا وجدناه صابرا نعم العبد } أيوب { إنه أوَّاب } رجّاع إلى الله تعالى . |

| মুহিউদ্দীন খান | তুমি তোমার হাতে এক মুঠো তৃণশলা নাও, তদ্বারা আঘাত কর এবং শপথ ভঙ্গ করো না। আমি তাকে পেলাম সবরকারী। চমৎকার বান্দা সে। নিশ্চয় সে ছিল প্রত্যাবর্তনশীল। |
| Literal | And take with your hand a handful of grass/a handful, so strike/beat with it, and do not break oath, that We, We found him patient blessed/praised the slave/servant , that he truly is repentant . |

But when he did recover, he bitterly regretted his hasty oath, for he realized that his wife's "blasphemy" had been an outcome of her love and pity for him; and thereupon he was told in a revelation that he could fulfill his vow in a symbolic manner by striking her once with "a bunch of grass containing a hundred blades or more". (Cf. 5:89 - "God will not take you to task for oaths which you may have uttered without thought.")] - for, verily, We found him full of patience in adversity: how excellent a servant [of Ours], who, behold, would always turn unto Us! |
